Masquerader Monday - 17.09.18 | Paskel

Each Monday we will be featuring a masquerader from around the world. We want to share the stories of the beautiful masqueraders who can continue to build the online community and encourage confidence in other masqueraders.

Each testimonial will show the power of positivity, as well as a celebration of women of all shapes, sizes, and body types. Each and every voice is an important one, and the more we can all lend to this conversation about #ConfidenceInCarnival, the stronger the international communication will resonate.

It is my hope that the information will also be a warm welcome and invitation for other carnival enthusiasts worldwide to connect, share experiences, and build on this movement of self-love and Caribbean cultural celebration.

If you are interested in being featured please email us and we will be in contact!

My experience as the Face of the Festival for Toronto Carnival 2019

I  have been attending Caribbean carnivals since a child, and each and every experience is unique and special in its own way. From Trinidad to Jamaica, and Atlanta to Washington, each carnival has its own flavour, its own style, and its own vibe. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, I can’t help but have an appreciation for our carnival and feel a personal responsibility for its execution and the enjoyment of everyone. Whether through volunteering, participating, or helping administrators and costume makers along the way I have always tried to have my hand in the production of Toronto’s carnival. This year, as the Face of the Festival (along with Joel “The Connector” Davis), I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to officially represent the carnival in public and in mass media, and the honour was everything I could have asked for, as a support of our hometown festival. It all began with my application for the Face of the Festival competition, where I...
BODY-POSITIVE MOVEMENT USES INTERNATIONAL BODY SHAMING EPISODE TO INSPIRE CHANGES TO CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL COSTUME PRODUCTION TORONTO, ONT. (APRIL 2018) – When #everyBODYplayahmas (EBPAM) founder, full-figured model Nadelle travelled to participate in this year’s Jamaica Carnival, she didn’t know that it would spark a positive change for her movement, as well as ignite an international body shaming event that placed her image and costume as the target of unwarranted negative attention. The online episode—that has now attracted thousands of views, likes, and hateful remarks—is now being used as fuel to inspire positive changes for full-figured costuming in Caribbean Carnivals around the world. On Wednesday, April 11, 2018, a post from Jamaican publication The Jamaica Star was the beginning of what seemed to be an endless stream of mean-spirited commentaries and punchlines. It was a photograph of a pretty masquerader...wearing a costume that the majority deemed to be “not h...

My hobbies include swimming, dancing, and chasing carnival dreams. How and when did you first start playing mas?  * I first started playing mas in 2013. I was exposed to it from a young age in Jamaica when my aunt participated. My first experience was not a pleasant one but the next year I found a new mas camp to participate in and it was love ever since. From there I tried out to model and did my first photoshoot for Miami Carnival 2017. What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date?  * My favorite carnival experience has to be New York 2017. I had such a great time with my friends and I fe...
