I am the owner and operator of a natural hair salon that specializes in Sisterlocks, named Krown and Glory. I am a mother of 3 amazing kids. And a carnival addict with no known Caribbean root but I still love to play mas with my plain ol' American self. How and when did you first start playing mas? * I started playing mas 3 years ago in 2017. A few of my clients are West Indian and they were educating me on the whole play mas process. As you can imagine, I was nervous but excited all the same. I then joined a local band named Island Oasis and that was the start of my carnival addiction. It was the prettiest, most fun and hardest workout I had ever done. And I just wanted to do it all over again and again. What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date? * It's hard to say my favorite carnival experience because they were all amazing. But I would have to pick between 2. Bahamas in May 2019 and the more recent Miami Carnival in October 2019. Bahamas w…

Wife, Mother of 4, Grandmother of 3. Full-time Employed for major Insurance carrier in the U.S. Loves to travel, read and spending time with family and friends How and when did you first start playing mas? * I first played mas in Brooklyn's West Indian Day Parade as a young woman. Although I always wanted to play as a child my mother was against it even though she never missed NY carnival. What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date? * I don't have a favorite as they all have a different vibe. I enjoy each carnival experience as it is an event that I share with my family. Since most of us live in different cities, we travel just to get that time to spend with each other doing what we enjoy the most What are some of your must-have carnival essentials? Must have essentials - comfortable shoes. If your feet hurt it will throw off your whole experience. I find that boots and sneakers make my feet hot and they ache more so I shop for comfortab…

Engineer by education and profession. Mom of one miracle baby boy. Soca lover How and when did you first start playing mas? * 2007 in Barbados. Totally last minute decision. I got what was left and obviously nothing plus was available. I wore a black swimsuit and spanx with the measly B cup bra and accessories. I had fun nonetheless! What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date? * St. Vincent Carnival. Playing in my parents home country was special. What are some of your must-have carnival essentials? Glue gun, an abundance of face jewels, proper footwear. Describe your perfect mas experience: Good vibes, good music, meals and drinks from the band, good weather! What would you like to tell people about mas, that they may not know? Mas is the love of soca and good vibes. People congregate to have fun and live life. I am at my most confident when I'm in full costume!
Would you change anything about playing mas in your city? The stormers. I wish th…

This is your connection to the ancestors. Throughout lost history, this is all we have to enjoy and cherish to pass onto future generations. Carnival is not a phase. Also, don't forget to take naps during your experience when you can lol. Would you change anything about playing mas in your city? I would like for the police to take the parade a little more seriously to prevent stormers from ruining the fun of the parade. If you could play mas with one soca art…

Current grad student, avid carnival lover, and big time foodie (I have a food insta!) How and when did you first start playing mas? * Officially in a costume? In my early tween years in Nevis for Culturama. What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date? * Wow this is a tough one but I would say my most recent experience in New York for Labor Day. The parade turned into a wet fete and everyone went with it and enjoyed themselves. The vibes and energy was just so pure 🤗 What are some of your must-have carnival essentials? Carnivalista tights! AN ABSOLUTE MUST! Additionally, definitely an emergency kit with a mini sewing kit, tampons/pad, a plastic shower cap (in case it becomes a wet fete), and spare money. Describe your perfect mas experience: A carefree, judgement free zone, embracing Caribbean culture! What would you like to tell people about mas, that they may not know? Once you start playing mas, it becomes a habit that'll be hard to get rid of. W…
