Masquerader Monday - 15.10.18 | Liliana

I am currently a live-in nanny pursing her YouTube/styling dreams in LA. I also love promoting self-love and confidence through my photos to all women, no matter the shape or size.
How and when did you first start playing mas?
The first time I played mas was in 2016 with Hollywood Carnival. My LA family are Trinidadian and very much apart of the carnival culture.
What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date?
My favorite carnival experience would definitely have to be modeling the one piece costume for Toronto’s Caribana. I was a part of Dr. Jay’s “Venice Fly Trap” section and I was extremely nervous, being one of the very few plus-size models. But the minute I hit the stage and heard everyone cheering for me, I knew I was doing something right.
What are some of your must-have carnival essentials?
My carnival must-have is tights...two pairs! Not only does it hold everything together and give your legs a nice, finished look, it’s the only way my thighs can last all day long dancing down the road. And you can’t forget about comfortable shoes !
Describe your perfect mas experience:
My perfect mas experience is a great group of friends and perfect weather. Carnival is all about letting loose with those you love, and a little sun and breeze to keep you doing.
What would you like to tell people about mas, that they may not know?
One thing I would share about mas I’d choose your timing wisely. Trinidad’s carnival is an all day event and if you go out too early, you may not last.
Would you change anything about playing mas in your city?
If I could change anything about Hollywood Carnival, I would make it longer so everyone could enjoy turn-up on the road.
If you could play mas with one soca artist, who would it be, and why?
Michel Montano, of course ! He’s the king of soca and carnival, never a dull moment.
Do you have a message of encouragement for the #everyBODYplayahmas network? *
You do not have to look a certain way to wear a costume or play mas. Find a costume you like, even if you have to replace the bra or bottoms with your own. It is very important to feel comfortable in what you are wearing because not only does it show to others, it will affect whether or not you have a good time. So perfect your costume, feel sexy in front of the mirror, and mash it up!
Tell us about your journey to becoming a confident woman:
My journey has been a long one. I’ve always had more body than everyone growing up, so I would hide behind others to cover up. Getting a lot of love on social media, mainly from women, I learned that it’s okay to be unapologetically me and love myself. Once I truly got to that point, I noticed that I actually do have a big impact on other women view themselves.
Do you have any mentors/role models who have inspired you along the way?
Unfortunately I didn’t, and I had to become that for not only myself, but other women just like me. And that keeps me going.
How do you think movements like #everyBODYplayahmas assist masqueraders?
Movements like #everyBODYplayahmas is so important because we need a platform to tell girls that’s it’s okay to enjoy their cultures without letting society hold them back. And having one place to go to for inspiration instead of searching through thousands of hashtags makes a huge difference.

My experience as the Face of the Festival for Toronto Carnival 2019

I  have been attending Caribbean carnivals since a child, and each and every experience is unique and special in its own way. From Trinidad to Jamaica, and Atlanta to Washington, each carnival has its own flavour, its own style, and its own vibe. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, I can’t help but have an appreciation for our carnival and feel a personal responsibility for its execution and the enjoyment of everyone. Whether through volunteering, participating, or helping administrators and costume makers along the way I have always tried to have my hand in the production of Toronto’s carnival. This year, as the Face of the Festival (along with Joel “The Connector” Davis), I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to officially represent the carnival in public and in mass media, and the honour was everything I could have asked for, as a support of our hometown festival. It all began with my application for the Face of the Festival competition, where I expressed my

Carnival is for #everyBODY!

#everyBODYplayahmas is a body positive movement that showcases diversity in Caribbean carnivals. The body positivity movement is a social movement that seeks to promote acceptance and appreciation of all body types and sizes. The movement emphasizes the importance of self-love, self-care, and self-acceptance, regardless of physical appearance. In the context of Caribbean carnivals, which are vibrant celebrations of Caribbean culture and heritage, the body positivity movement can play an important role in promoting diversity and inclusivity. Caribbean carnivals are known for their colorful costumes, lively music, and energetic dancing, but they can also be a source of body shaming and exclusion for those who do not conform to traditional beauty standards. To showcase diversity in Caribbean carnivals, the body positivity movement can encourage people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to participate in the festivities. This can be done by creating inclusive spaces where people can fee
