Brief biography (profession, hobbies, passions, etc.): *
I’m a social worker by day, but professional carnival chaser by night. I have been professionally chasing the next jump and wave since 2008, but attended my first Trinidad carnival at the tender age of 4. Since then, there has been no looking back. Soca races through my blood and veins.
How and when did you first start playing mas? *
My first experience as a masquerader was in 2005 for Toronto Caribana. I played with a band known as Calaloo back then. I was invited by a friend who was in the party scene to play and in turn, encouraged another friend (American) to come up to Toronto for carnival. The three of us had ah time that year boy, wow! Since then, I have played mas almost every year and continue to chase carnivals throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean.
What carnival experience has been your favourite (and most proud) to date? *
My favourite carnival experience to date is ALL of them. I can’t choose one, as each carnival brings with it, its own unique special moments. From being front stage at your fave concert, to jamming on the beach under the sunset, to crossing the big stage.....three times...lol! All the experiences have one thing in common.....love and unity. That’s what carnival is all about and makes me proud to be Caribbean.
What are some of your must-have carnival essentials?
On the road, the most imporant thing to have is water. Staying hydrated is crucial as you’ll need it with all the jumping and waving done....oh yeah, and rum drinking! Also, with that goes comfortable shoes/boots to ensure you survive the entire day(s). Lastly, a handy pouch, purse or fanny packs vital to hold all your other essentials.
If you could play mas with one soca artist, who would it be, and why?
Well, those who know me know this would obviously be Kes the Band. Besides their music always being amazing and showcasing the culture, this band represents what soca music is about, love and unity. Their music brings people together worldwide and allows us to see what we can accomplish together, through love rather than hate. Plus, I feel Kees would be able to give be a good wine on the road :)
Do you think there is currently an unspoken age or size limit on playing mas?
I believe that is the beautiful part about playing mas, it doesn’t matter what size you are, or colour, gender, etc. It’s about togetherness and love. Loving yourself is so important and essential for others to be able to see you in a positive light. Getting out there on the road and “freeing” up yourself, exposing your true self and still loving who you are is what mas is about. Having fun!
Do you have a message of encouragement for the #everyBODYplayahmas network? *
Be confident in who you are. Set goals and continue to strive for them. Use the support system around you and most importantly love yourself, because no BODY else will. Love and light.
How do you think movements like #everyBODYplayahmas assist masqueraders?
Movements like EBPAM assist masquerades by encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zone. It motivates individuals who may not normally have thought to take part in these Caribbean festivals to give it a second look, as we are now seeing a variety of body shapes and sizes portrayed in a positive tone. Representation is important and movements like this one are doing just that. Showcasing all body types, sizes, etc. letting the world know #everyBODYplayahmas and look good too!

My experience as the Face of the Festival for Toronto Carnival 2019

I  have been attending Caribbean carnivals since a child, and each and every experience is unique and special in its own way. From Trinidad to Jamaica, and Atlanta to Washington, each carnival has its own flavour, its own style, and its own vibe. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, I can’t help but have an appreciation for our carnival and feel a personal responsibility for its execution and the enjoyment of everyone. Whether through volunteering, participating, or helping administrators and costume makers along the way I have always tried to have my hand in the production of Toronto’s carnival. This year, as the Face of the Festival (along with Joel “The Connector” Davis), I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to officially represent the carnival in public and in mass media, and the honour was everything I could have asked for, as a support of our hometown festival. It all began with my application for the Face of the Festival competition, where I expressed my

Carnival is for #everyBODY!

#everyBODYplayahmas is a body positive movement that showcases diversity in Caribbean carnivals. The body positivity movement is a social movement that seeks to promote acceptance and appreciation of all body types and sizes. The movement emphasizes the importance of self-love, self-care, and self-acceptance, regardless of physical appearance. In the context of Caribbean carnivals, which are vibrant celebrations of Caribbean culture and heritage, the body positivity movement can play an important role in promoting diversity and inclusivity. Caribbean carnivals are known for their colorful costumes, lively music, and energetic dancing, but they can also be a source of body shaming and exclusion for those who do not conform to traditional beauty standards. To showcase diversity in Caribbean carnivals, the body positivity movement can encourage people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to participate in the festivities. This can be done by creating inclusive spaces where people can fee
