Face of the Festival - Toronto Caribbean Carnival Mas Camp Tours

TORONTO CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL “FACE OF THE FESTIVAL” NADELLE TO TOUR MAS CAMPS

TORONTO, ONT (July 3, 2019) – Nadelle, the “Face of the Festival” for the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, is set to visit with the mas camps of the participating bands in this year’s festival. Nadelle will tour the carnival headquarters of each group to engage with band leaders, section leaders, volunteers, and community members.

The mas camp—the gathering place for leaders, designers, and supporters of each masquerade band—is the hub of activity during the carnival season. Traditionally located in industrial areas of the city (the majority of which are in Scarborough), the warehouse/showroom spaces house costume materials, are the location for special events throughout the summer, and serve as a meeting place to build momentum and plan for the season.

“Volunteering at mas camps during the summer is a part of my yearly routine,” said Nadelle, who has enjoyed her role helping to recruit and coordinate (for junior carnival in particular) over the years. “I look forward to this tour and being able to experience each band’s personality and the unique elements they bring to the carnival.”

In the past, Nadelle has worked with many of the bands, interacting with the teams to ensure their costumes had reasonable options or that they would be willing to make accommodations for those who required modifications based on comfort or size.

“The bands in Toronto have been supportive of #everyBODYplayahmas over the years and have made efforts to include full-figured models in their band launches,” said Nadelle. “I hope to have the opportunity to personally thank the band leaders and section leaders for being inclusive.”

As the “Face of the Festival,” Nadelle will be present at all official Toronto Carnival events, endorsing the festival for the weeks leading up to the parade on August 3. She will also continue to spread the messaging of #everyBODYplayahmas along the way.

My experience as the Face of the Festival for Toronto Carnival 2019

I  have been attending Caribbean carnivals since a child, and each and every experience is unique and special in its own way. From Trinidad to Jamaica, and Atlanta to Washington, each carnival has its own flavour, its own style, and its own vibe. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, I can’t help but have an appreciation for our carnival and feel a personal responsibility for its execution and the enjoyment of everyone. Whether through volunteering, participating, or helping administrators and costume makers along the way I have always tried to have my hand in the production of Toronto’s carnival. This year, as the Face of the Festival (along with Joel “The Connector” Davis), I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to officially represent the carnival in public and in mass media, and the honour was everything I could have asked for, as a support of our hometown festival. It all began with my application for the Face of the Festival competition, where I...

Ubersoca Cruise 2023: A Project Manager's Perspective on Sailing into Soca Paradise

This year marked a thrilling chapter for me as I stepped into the heart of the action, not as a reveler, but as a key player in the execution of the unforgettable Ubersoca Cruise 2023. As a project manager overseeing event execution and liaising with artists and DJs, I gained profound insights into the orchestration of this colossal and amazing event. Destination Delights: Belize and Costa Maya Sailing on the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas, we made stops in the enchanting Harvest Caye, Belize, and the vibrant Costa Maya, Mexico. The familiar throb of excitement synonymous with USC was seamlessly transported onto the Explorer of the Seas. Musical Bliss: Concerts and Pool Parties The sonic landscape of USC is always a highlight, and this year was no exception. The White Onyx concert featuring Ricardo Drue, Alison Hinds, Shal Marshall, Patrice, Voice, and King Bubba set the stage for a musical journey. The Olympic Swim Team pool party made a splash, but the real knockout was the Fig...
